This plant should be watered regularly. During sunny periods we recommend watering every day. During less sunny periods we recommend watering once every 3 days, unless it has rained. The Ensete ventricosum Maurellii, like almost all banana plants, consists of 80% water. We therefore recommend that you keep the root ball well moist.
The red banana plant needs a place with a lot of light to grow quickly, but it can also be placed in a place with a lot of shade, only the banana plant will grow a bit slower.
Nutrition is very important for plants. We recommend the use of high quality Mediterranean nutrient tablets, these are simply pressed into the soil next to the plant and the plant will keep its dark green leaf colour.
The red banana plant can tolerate up to +5 degrees Celsius. below that, it becomes harmful to the plant, so make sure the plant is in a warm place in winter, and not in the garden.

When the red banana plant is standing outside it needs little water during colder periods, but during the hot days of summer it needs water every day, sometimes twice on the hottest days. In between, it can be watered once every 2-4 days, depending on the temperature. You can feel this from the soil. If the soil is reasonably moist, the banana plant still has enough water.
A red banana plant loves good nutrient soil. For example, you can spoil the root ball with a bag of Florentus Mediterranean Nutrition Soil, specially developed for Mediterranean plants such as the Maurelli. This allows it to root extra well and provides it with the right nutrient base.
For a Maurelli it is a natural thing that leaves become dry and die off. You can simply cut them off close to the trunk. The banana plant does not suffer from this. It is also often recommended to cut off the leaves before the winter so that the energy does not go there to grow, because the new year will bring new leaves.
The red banana plant can withstand the hot sun well, so in summer it doesn't have to go inside. It also can withstand rain, so in autumn and spring and rainy days of summer it doesn't have to go inside either. But when it's cold from 5 degrees Celsius it gets heavy. Then it needs to be taken to a warmer place.
For the multiplication of the ventricosum Maurelli we refer you to our expanded encyclopedia article in which everything is explained.
It may be that the Maurelli does not get enough water during the growing season, but it is also a natural thing that leaves become barren. Some leaves have simply reached their age and then die off. The leaves can be removed with scissors, or by hand.
The Maurelli is non-toxic, and can therefore be placed in an environment with cats / dogs.
We have a very simple answer to this question. Teeninga Palmen is a specialist in hardy Mediterranean plants and trees, and offers them for the lowest price and the highest quality, so the choice is easy!
Our plant sizes are determined by measuring the smallest plants up until the largest in a field with hundreds of plants. Because a plant is a natural product, it's possible a plant is a little smaller than the mentioned minimum size.
This deviation is 10cm maximum. In our guidelines we keep a margin of max. 10cm regarding the minimum size.
Note: when you order a plant that doesn't stay green in the winter, it's probably (when ordered during the winter months or the beginning spring season) smaller than the minimum size. This is not a problem in any case, because the plant will grow new branches or leaves and the minimum height will be reached within a short period. Your order will have the right size within a short time.
