The Washingtonia robusta is a great beautiful ornamental palm, also called the desert palm. This palm is found in Africa and the Mediterranean coast. It derives its gracefulness from its long thin leaves around which beautiful threads curl. This makes it appeal to almost everyone.

The Washingtonia grows a thick stem, but is nevertheless not hardy. Its stems have small thorns, so be careful when handling this palm, for scratches in your skin or holes in clothing.

If you would still like to have this palm outside, you can do so up to -5 degrees. Below that it will have real problems.

Note, important!
We always recommend to immediately repot a purchased plant into a larger sized pot, because the pots sold are usually completely rooted. It allows the plant to root more, grow more and it's better for keeping the soil moist.

Most often the plant is around the minimum size. The height of the plant is always incl. pot height. Its actual height depends on the various sources of supply and how long the plant has been staying and growing in our stock environment.

A plant with a nice pot enhances the atmosphere much more and becomes more beautiful than without one. Of course the pot should match the plant and location. The recommended diameter of a pot for this Washingtonia robusta is 78 - 140 cm. This is not only an eye-pleasing proportion, but also makes caring for the plant more easy.

Plants Encyclopedia

All interesting and necessary information about the Washingtonia robusta is found in our encyclopedia

Watering

This plant should be watered regularly. During sunny periods, we recommend watering every day. During less sunny periods, we recommend once every 3 days unless it has rained.

Placement

This plant should be placed in a place with lots of sunshine. The more sun, the faster the growth, but also the more moisture it needs.

Nutrition

Nutrition is very important for plants. We recommend that you provide this plant with a good nutrient medium by using high quality Mediterranean Fertilizer. We also recommend additional nutrients: Mediterranean food tablets, which you simply press into the soil next to the plant. This ensures the supply of all necessary nutrients. The plant will then also retain its dark green leaf color.

Cutting

Pruning a palm is simple. When a leaf starts to go dry the fairly thick branch should be cut off close to the trunk using a pair of secateurs. The palm grows new shoots every year that grow into large fan leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions / FAQ

Is Washingtonia robusta toxic to dogs or cats?

No, this palm tree is fine to be placed in an area with animals. However, this palm does get thorns, so animals should not jump on it, etc.

How fast does Washingtonia robusta grow?

The growth rate of the Washingtonia robusta depends on its size and age, or growing phase, but during the peak of its life it grows up to one meter per year! This does require optimal conditions.

How hardy is the Washingtonia robusta?

The Washingtonia robusta is hardy to -5 degrees Celsius. We recommend bringing the palm tree inside when it starts to freeze. Freezing temperatures with wind is disastrous for the Washingtonia.

How should I care for my Washingtonia robusta?

You can find everything about caring for the robusta in our extended encyclopedia article

How long does a Washingtonia robusta live?

The expected age of a Washingtonia robusta exceeds 500 years! So you can purchase a robusta without any problem, because it will grow older than us.

Our plant sizes are determined by measuring the smallest plants up until the largest in a field with hundreds of plants. Because a plant is a natural product, it's possible a plant is a little smaller than the mentioned minimum size.

This deviation is 10cm maximum. In our guidelines we keep a margin of max. 10cm regarding the minimum size.

Note: when you order a plant that doesn't stay green in the winter, it's probably (when ordered during the winter months or the beginning spring season) smaller than the minimum size. This is not a problem in any case, because the plant will grow new branches or leaves and the minimum height will be reached within a short period. Your order will have the right size within a short time.

Special transport is required for larger/heavier plants or objects. This transport costs 29,95 (free for orders above 300). The benefit of this transport is that more products can be selected without getting additional transport costs. The delivery time of this transport type usually is within 1 workday. Howiever, it can take 1 or more days in some cases. If you're not at home when the driver arrives, the order will be placed in front of your door.
