The Musa Basjoo is the most hardy banana plant that can withstand temperatures down to -7C. It is also the best banana plant to plant out in your garden.

It grows fairly fast and can grow up to 400cm high in the Netherlands, with leaves up to 200cm long. In a warm summer there can also be a lotus flower where small bananas can arrive. Unfortunately, in almost all cases they are too small to eat, but it really gives the feeling of the tropics in our Dutch backyard.

If you want to buy a hardy banana plant, we recommend the Musa Basjoo, it's a real winner.

The musa basjo is a fast grower but stops growing under -14C.

We therefore recommend that you keep 35 cm cuttings indoors until the end of April/May, so that they can grow properly, and then plant them out, so that you have a nice large banana plant in the summer months.

Pay attention

Some leaves can be removed for transport. Despite the care taken in packing, it is possible that a leaf breaks off during transport, That's okay, you can just cut it off and a new one will grow very quickly.

Watering

This plant should be watered regularly. During sunny periods we recommend watering every day. During less sunny periods we recommend watering once every 3 days, unless it has rained. The Musa Basjoo consists of 80% water. We therefore recommend that you keep the root ball well moist.

Placement

The Musa Basjoo banana plant needs a place with lots of light to grow quickly, but it can also be placed in a place with lots of shade, only it will grow a little slower.

Nutrition

Nutrition is very important for plants and we recommend to provide this plant with a good breeding ground by using high quality Mediterranean soil. We also recommend adding extra nutrients through watering, by mixing a cap of Universal Plant Nutrition with 5 liters of water. This will ensure the supply of all necessary nutrients, so the plant will keep its dark green leaf colour.
