The Musa basjoo is the most hardy banana plant that can tolerate temperatures down to -7C. The roots are even stronger, they can tolerate -15C/-20C (outdoors). It is also the best banana plant to plant out in your garden.

It grows fairly fast and can grow up to 400 cm high in the Netherlands, with leaves as long as 200 cm. A warm summer can also produce a lotus flower on which small bananas can grow. Unfortunately, in almost all cases they are too small to eat, but it really gives the feeling of the tropics in our Dutch backyard.

If you want to buy a hardy banana plant, we recommend the Musa basjoo, it's a real topper.

The Musa basjoo is a fast grower but stops growing below -14C.

We therefore recommend that you keep cuttings of 35 cm indoors until the end of April/May, so that they can grow well, and then plant them out. Then you have a beautiful large banana plant in the summer months.

Winter protection:
The roots of the Musa basjoo are very hardy, sometimes it is even said that they can have minus 20 degrees (in open ground).
We recommend to protect the Musa basjoo!
You can do this by packing the trunk in the colder months.

Protecting the Musa basjoo in winter is how you do it:
1. First remove all the leaves of the Musa basjoo.
2. Chop the trunk at the desired height (1 metre high).
3. Chicken wire netting around the trunk and top it up with hay.
4. Old leaves on the ground near the Musa basjoo.
5. Then wrap him up with a fleece or jute.

If the strain was well enough protected during the winter months, the Musa basjoo will grow out of it again!
If the trunk has not or not well protected, the Musa basjoo will turn into a goo-like substance. Attention: remove the rotten parts and then the Musa basjoo will come out of the ground again later!

The Musa basjoo is only winter hardy in open ground. In a pot it must hibernate frost-free.

Let op: Some leaves can be removed for transport.

Despite the care taken when packing, it can happen that a leaf breaks off during transport.

That's okay, you can just cut it off and a new one will grow very quickly.

Frequently asked questions, FAQ

Is the Musa basjoo hardy?

The Musa basjoo can withstand cold up to a wind chill (depending on how much wind there is) of 18 degrees below zero. Below that it needs to be protected.

How to take care of a Musa basjoo?

You can find everything about the care of the Musa basjoo in our expanded encyclopaedia article.

How to protect a Musa basjoo from frost / Winter

When the cold gets below -18 degrees Celsius, protection is necessary for the survival of a Musa basjoo. This is done by wrapping fleece (a well breathing thin cloth) around the canopy, so that the wind is blocked. When the Musa basjoo is standing in the ground, no protection for the root ball is needed. But when it is standing in an uninsulated pot, the root ball must also be protected. This is done by wrapping bubble wrap plastic (or other insulating material) around the pot, so that the wind no longer has any influence through the edge of the pot.

When the Musa basjoo waters?

When the Musa basjoo is outside, it needs little water during the winters, almost none. But during the hot days of summer, it needs water every day, sometimes twice on the hottest days. In between, it can be once every 2-4 days, depending on the temperature. You can feel this from the soil. If the soil is fairly moist, the banana plant still has enough water.

What kind of ground does the Musa basjoo want?

A Musa basjoo loves good nutrient soil. For example, you can spoil the root ball with a bag of Florentus Mediterranean nutrient soil, specially developed for Mediterranean plants such as the Musa basjoo.

How to prune / cut a Musa basjoo?

For a Musa basjoo, it is a natural thing that leaves become dry and die off. You can simply cut them close to the trunk. The banana plant does not suffer from this. It is also often recommended to cut the leaves before the winter so that the energy does not go there to grow, because the new year will bring new leaves.

When putting the Musa basjoo inside?

The Musa basjoo can withstand the hot sun well, so in the summer it doesn't have to go inside. It also can withstand rain, so in autumn and spring and rainy days of summer it doesn't have to go inside either. But, when it freezes down to -18 (so really exceptional in the Netherlands) it gets heavy, so it needs to be protected, or taken to a warmer place.

How to cut / propagate a Musa basjoo

For the multiplication of the Musa basjoo we refer you to our expanded encyclopedia article in which everything is explained.

Why does a Musa basjoo get yellow leaves?

It may be that the Musa basjoo does not get enough water during the growing season, but it is also a natural thing that leaves become dry. Some leaves have simply reached their age and then die off. The leaves can be removed with scissors, or by hand.

Are Musa basjoo's poisonous to cats / dogs?

The Musa basjoo is non-toxic, and can therefore be placed in an environment with cats / dogs.
