Pay attention

The amount of water depends on, among other things, the temperature, size of the plant and light intensity. There must be absolutely no layer of water at the bottom of the pot. The soil must be able to absorb all the moisture. If in doubt, it is better to give less water. A Ficus uses about half the amount of water in winter compared to summer.

Watering

The soil of a Ficus should always be slightly moist, without the plant with its roots in the water. It is therefore wise to give small amounts of water at a time. Do not water again until the soil begins to feel drier.

Placement

Ficus need a lot of sunlight, preferably at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. This can be done by placing the plant 2-3 meters in front of a window facing south or directly in front of the window facing north, west or east. When this houseplant is further away from the window, growth will stagnate and falling leaves will be replaced less quickly.

Nutrition

Do not feed houseplants in autumn or winter. Do not start feeding until the nutrients from the potting soil have been used up. This is for most brands of potting soil after about 6 to 8 weeks.

Cutting

Prune Ficus every autumn, or if the plant gets too big. This has the advantage that the houseplant remains nicely compact, without ugly shoots. In addition, more sunlight reaches the core of Ficus during the winter. Ficus Nitida compacta is an exception, this can best be pruned in May.

Additional

The flowering of a Ficus is not noticeable. The plant produces small (green) figs. Within these figs the flowering takes place, in which a small flower develops. In the living room this process will rarely or never occur. If it does occur, we recommend removing the flowers. Flowers cost a plant a lot of energy which it can better put into its leaves and vitality.
