Looking for a palm that really takes your tropical garden to the Next Level? Then we recommend 2 species. This one, the Phoenix dactylifera, or its cousin the Phoenix canariensis.

In the Netherlands this palm is somewhat less special than in warm foreign countries. Why? The edible dates do not grow as well in the Dutch climate. But otherwise - wow! What a genius it is. This is the family rival of the Phoenix canariensis. It is slightly less full of leaves, but it is still an impressive impression maker that is more hardy. With less maintenance and still a great impression, this is a preferred palm to the canariensis for many people.

So, if you want less maintenance and still a great look, this is definitely a great choice. If maintenance is not an issue, we would also recommend checking out the Phoenix canariensis. We think this one is just a touch more beautiful, but that comes with additional requirements.

Note, important!
We always recommend to immediately repot a purchased plant into a larger sized pot, because the pots sold are usually completely rooted. It allows the plant to root more, grow more and it's better for keeping the soil moist.

Most often the plant is around the minimum size. The height of the plant is always incl. pot height. Its actual height depends on the various sources of supply and how long the plant has been staying and growing in our stock environment.

Let your plant shine

A plant with a nice pot enhances the atmosphere much more and becomes more beautiful than without one. Of course the pot should match the plant and location. The recommended diameter of a pot for this Phoenix dactylifera is 128 - 240 cm. This is not only an eye-pleasing proportion, but also makes caring for the plant more easy.

Plants Encyclopedia

All interesting and necessary information about the Phoenix dactylifera is found in our encyclopedia

Watering

This plant should be watered regularly. During sunny periods, we recommend watering every day. During less sunny periods, we recommend once every 3 days unless it has rained.

Placement

This plant should be placed in a place with lots of sunshine. The more sun, the faster the growth, but also the more moisture it needs.

Nutrition

Nutrition is very important for plants. We recommend that you provide this plant with a good nutrient medium by using high quality Mediterranean Fertilizer. We also recommend additional nutrients: Mediterranean food tablets, which you simply press into the soil next to the plant. This ensures the supply of all necessary nutrients. The plant will then also retain its dark green leaf color.

Cutting

Pruning a palm is simple. When a leaf starts to go dry the fairly thick branch should be cut off close to the trunk using a pair of secateurs. The palm grows new shoots every year that grow into large fan leaves.

Phoenix dactylifera - Date palm

This date palm is a real eye-catcher. It looks somewhat like the Phoenix canariensis but is clearly different. The canariensis has a somewhat fuller leaf, and the leaves of the date palm are somewhat thinner.

Frequently asked questions, FAQ

.

How fast does the Phoenix dactylifera grow?

. A large dactylifera grows faster than a young one, which happens mostly in the summer period. In winter with cold, dactylifera go dormant, then they hardly grow unless kept warm. A smaller dactylifera of say 140cm, whose trunk is about 40-50cm, grows at about 10cm per year. And even smaller dactyliferas even less. So it comes down to the size of the dactylifera and the environment, how fast it grows.

How tall will the Phoenix dactylifera date palm grow?

. A dactylifera grows up to 10 meters high, in the tropics, but in the Netherlands they sometimes do not get higher than 2 meters, unless they are imported and have undergone a special process to get used to our climate. Note that in the young years a dactylifera grows very slowly. Only after several years does it begin to get going.

Dadel palm Phoenix dactylifera, how often to water?

. During the winter period in the cold, a dactylifera can go a week without water, and then it should not get too much even. But the warmer the weather and the more sunlight, the more water it needs. During the hottest days, a dactylifera may need to be soaked as much as 2x in a day.

Phoenix dactylifera, when to prune?

. Throughout the year, the leaves of the dactylifera can become barren. Once they are too dry to make the palm look beautiful, they can be cut off at the trunk with pruning shears. In this way, the dactylifera forms its trunk.

Phoenix dactylifera, when to sow?

. We recommend sowing the dactylifera outdoors around spring. Indoors, the period does not matter.

Our plant sizes are determined by measuring the smallest plants up until the largest in a field with hundreds of plants. Because a plant is a natural product, it's possible a plant is a little smaller than the mentioned minimum size.

This deviation is 10cm maximum. In our guidelines we keep a margin of max. 10cm regarding the minimum size.

Note: when you order a plant that doesn't stay green in the winter, it's probably (when ordered during the winter months or the beginning spring season) smaller than the minimum size. This is not a problem in any case, because the plant will grow new branches or leaves and the minimum height will be reached within a short period. Your order will have the right size within a short time.

Special transport is required for larger/heavier plants or objects. This transport costs 29,95 (free for orders above 300). The benefit of this transport is that more products can be selected without getting additional transport costs. The delivery time of this transport type usually is within 1 workday. Howiever, it can take 1 or more days in some cases. If you're not at home when the driver arrives, the order will be placed in front of your door.
