The Canarian date palm (Phoenix Canariensis). The name says it all, it comes from the Canary Islands, but is also common in parts of Africa.

It is immediately reminiscent of a tropical resort and creates a Mediterranean atmosphere in your home.

It has beautiful dark green feathery leaves, and turns any place in your home into a piece of the tropics.

You may also have seen them on holiday in Europe, as they are common along the Mediterranean coast.

With its thick stem and beautiful leaves it is a feast for the eyes.

It is a very popular feather palm in the Netherlands because in the spring and summer months it can also be placed in the garden as a tub plant, and can tolerate a few degrees of frost.

The growth rate of the Canarian date-palm is fairly fast. The lower leaves will eventually die off. This is normal, according to its growth habit, which has to be removed by hand, resulting in its stocky trunk.

The Canarian date palm has small thorns at the lower leaves.

What is very important to know is that the root ball (potting soil) of the Canarian date-palm should never dry out. If it does, the palm may have dried leaves, which should be removed.

It is a dioecious palm with a stocky trunk with scars of leaves and a dense crown with 50 to 100 pinnate leaves (in adults). The leaves can grow up to 5-6 metres long, wide, short stemmed and curved overhanging.

The leaflets are green, firm, narrow-lance-shaped and v-shaped folded. The lower leaflets are often reduced and have thorns. The middle leaflets are 40-50 cm long.

If you choose to keep this palm as a tub plant, we recommend that you keep it in a frost-free place for the winter.

Plants Encyclopedia

All interesting and necessary information about the Phoenix canariensis is found in our encyclopedia

Watering

This plant should be watered regularly. During sunny periods we recommend watering every day. During less sunny periods we recommend watering once every 3 days, unless it has rained.

Placement

This plant should be placed in a place where the sun shines a lot. The more sun, the faster the growth, but also the more moisture it needs.

Nutrition

Nutrition is very important for plants and we recommend to provide this plant with a good breeding ground by using high quality Mediterranean soil. We also recommend adding extra nutrients through watering by mixing a cap of Palm Focus with 5 liters of water. This will ensure the supply of all the necessary nutrients, so that the plant will keep its dark green leaf colour.

Cutting

Pruning a palm is simple. When a leaf starts to get dry, the fairly thick branch of it should be cut off near the trunk with, for example, a pruning shear. Every year the palm has new shoots that grow into large fan leaves.
