The Phalaenopsis - Butterfly orchid

Different sizes
The Butterfly Orchid is a very popular houseplant. You can see it in almost every living room.

With proper care it can flower up to 2 to 3 times a year,
during periods ranging from 2 to 6 months!

We have listed a number of care tips that will allow you to enjoy a Butterfly Orchid for years to come.

The Butterfly Orchid is often called the most popular girl of the class. She is also often called butterfly orchid because of her appearance. Phalaenopsis, which comes from the Greek 'phalaina' 'moth' and 'opsis' 'similar', so 'moth-like'. And indeed, the flowers of the phalaenopsis resemble flying moth butterflies.

The amazing flowers come in purple, pink, salmon, white, yellow and even blue and often have a creative speckled or striped pattern.

Orchids are best placed in a light spot, but do not put them in direct sunlight from April to October.

When the plants are in full sunlight, the leaves turn yellow and discolour the flowers. They do not thrive in dry places such as above the radiator, nor do they like draughts.

Even a spot near the fruit bowl does not make the orchid happy. The Orchid is easy to tell when it wants a sip of water because then the roots turn white. You can water it then. Don't give it too much water at all! It's best once a week a little.

We also recommend using special potting soil for orchids. You can also 'dip' the orchid. Even better than spraying water from the watering can, you can dip the plant in a container or bucket.

Immerse the pot in lukewarm (rain) water once every 7 to 10 days for about 10 minutes. Let the orchid drain well after dipping, it does not like wet feet.

It is advisable to allow the plant to drain properly after dipping, as the orchid does not like to stand with its roots in the water.

Orchids like high humidity. You can easily achieve this by spraying the orchid with a plant sprayer. This is best done in the morning.
