This hardy feather palm is also called coconut palm of Chile. It has strong stiff leaves that cannot break easily and is hardy to -15 degrees. It is very rare.
There are only 100,000 specimens left in the wild. That's because they used to be cut down for their juice. They used to make Chilean palm wine from it. It can grow up to 25 metres high and also gets small coconuts, even in the Netherlands. Of course, we need some patience for this. The trunk can reach a thickness of 1.3 metres! It can withstand long times of drought, and doesn't really need a very hot summer to grow. It's the most hardy feather palm.
Jubaea chilensis is a palm tree with a trunk up to 24 meters high and a diameter up to 1.8 meters. The trunk sometimes shows a slight thickening in the middle, is usually dark gray, with rings of diamond-shaped leaf foot scars on the older parts.
The crown of leaves is up to 7.6 meters wide and 4.5-6 meters high.
The leaves are pinnate, 2.4-3.6 metres long, on short petioles up to 30 cm long, narrow, rigid, dark green at the top and grey-green at the bottom.
They are 1.2 metres long, upright with small purple male and female flowers on the same inflorescence.
The fruit is round, 2.5 cm, yellow to orange in hanging bunches.

Nutrition is very important for plants. We recommend that this plant is provided with a good nutrient base by using high quality Mediterranean nutrient soil. We also recommend that you administer extra nutrients. Mediterranean nutrient tablets, these are simply pressed into the soil next to the plant. This ensures the supply of all the necessary nutrients and the plant will keep its dark green leaf colour.

Pruning a palm is simple. When a leaf starts to dry out, the fairly thick branch near the trunk should be trimmed with e.g. pruning shears. The palm gets new shoots every year that grow into large fan leaves.

Our plant sizes are determined by measuring the smallest plants up until the largest in a field with hundreds of plants. Because a plant is a natural product, it's possible a plant is a little smaller than the mentioned minimum size.
This deviation is 10cm maximum. In our guidelines we keep a margin of max. 10cm regarding the minimum size.
Note: when you order a plant that doesn't stay green in the winter, it's probably (when ordered during the winter months or the beginning spring season) smaller than the minimum size. This is not a problem in any case, because the plant will grow new branches or leaves and the minimum height will be reached within a short period. Your order will have the right size within a short time.
Special transport is required for larger/heavier plants or objects. This transport costs 29,95 (free for orders above 300). The benefit of this transport is that more products can be selected without getting additional transport costs. The delivery time of this transport type usually is within 1 workday. Howiever, it can take 1 or more days in some cases. If you're not at home when the driver arrives, the order will be placed in front of your door.
