Tasmanian tree fern

The Dicksonia antarctica is a very beautiful tree fern that originated in Tasmania (Australia) high in the mountains where it also freezes. This also makes it very suitable for our Dutch climate.

Its beautiful leaves and primordial stem make it a real jungle plant, transforming any place it is placed into a piece of rainforest.
The Dicksonia antarctica has a beautiful stark stem that loves moisture. It looks a lot like a palm, but is definitely not one.

They are found in the jungle up to an age of as much as 300 years. Unfortunately, many are cut down because from the trunk, they make pots.

It is a somewhat trickier plant though, as it likes wetness very much and its winter hardiness is also moderate. Despite being told otherwise in other places, it cannot tolerate temperatures below 5C.
The best is of course to overwinter it frost-free, but it can also be placed in the open ground. However, it should then be protected!

The Dicksonia antarctica keeps its large light green fern leaves in winter.

Tree fern protection in winter:
In the open ground -7 to -11 degrees.
Wrap stem with frost cloth several times with a layer of hay in between. Leaves should be tied together and then packed in the core with hay, again several frost cloths around this.
If it gets colder than -11 degrees, we recommend also putting a light hose around it to keep it warm enough.

Please note that it should not dry out during the winter months!

The minimum temperature of the Dicksonia antarctica is -5ºC. It is recommended to wrap it well with a frost cloth. This is also good for the trunk

* Our tree ferns come directly from the rainforest of Tasmania and only sprout here in the Netherlands. This may mean that it is not yet fully rooted in the pot. This is not a problem because the trunk is actually the root.

We always recommend to immediately repot a purchased plant into a larger sized pot, because the pots sold are usually completely rooted. It allows the plant to root more, grow more and it's better for keeping the soil moist.

Most often the plant is around the minimum size. The height of the plant is always incl. pot height. Its actual height depends on the various sources of supply and how long the plant has been staying and growing in our stock environment.

Our plant sizes are determined by measuring the smallest plants up until the largest in a field with hundreds of plants. Because a plant is a natural product, it's possible a plant is a little smaller than the mentioned minimum size.

This deviation is 10cm maximum. In our guidelines we keep a margin of max. 10cm regarding the minimum size.

Note: when you order a plant that doesn't stay green in the winter, it's probably (when ordered during the winter months or the beginning spring season) smaller than the minimum size. This is not a problem in any case, because the plant will grow new branches or leaves and the minimum height will be reached within a short period. Your order will have the right size within a short time.

Special transport is required for larger/heavier plants or objects. This transport costs 29,95 (free for orders above 300). The benefit of this transport is that more products can be selected without getting additional transport costs. The delivery time of this transport type usually is within 1 workday. Howiever, it can take 1 or more days in some cases. If you're not at home when the driver arrives, the order will be placed in front of your door.
