Sempervivum - hardy fat plant

The Sempervivum - Winterhard Vetplantje is a beautiful plant which, due to its unique shape, transforms any space or garden into a piece of paradise.
In this article we are going to explain almost everything about the care of the Sempervivum: where to place the Sempervivum and how to water it, and of course all the other useful information about it.

The Sempervivum likes a sip of water

For almost all plants watering is an important part of survival and growth. The Sempervivum is certainly no exception! In this chapter you will find all the necessary information so that you can provide your Sempervivum - Winterhard Grease Plant with moisture in the right way.

Sempervivum is a succulent plant, which means it does not need a lot of water. It originally comes from a dry climate, so it does not have any problems with some Dutch sun. However, it is not recommended to water the Sempervivum in the sun. If you do this, the leaves may burn and turn ugly brown. Because of its short roots, it absorbs water quickly and stores it in its leaves and branches, so it needs little water. So it is easy to maintain.

When winter is around the corner, the rules are reversed! When the Sempervivum is outside, it has to stay dry so that the moisture does not freeze and damage the plant. The Sempervivum does not suffer from a dry root ball during this period, it is in a kind of hibernation!
When the plant is indoors with the winter it should be kept slightly moist, so not soaking wet but just that the root ball feels a little moist.

General rules

In addition to the upper guidelines, it is best to use the following rules:

First give the plant a little water. If the soil is dry within 2 days, this means it needs a little more water. Adjust the amount of water until it still feels slightly moist between 2 and 5 days after watering, and almost dry after 5 days. If it feels very wet after 5 days, then wait until it is almost dry and pour again, but reduce the amount.

We advise you to water the Sempervivum with water on a weekly basis, but we do not recommend this during the hot summer days, so either do it in the evening after sunset, or during days when the sun shines little, because the water droplets bundle the incoming sunlight into small dots that become very hot. These make the leaves dry, or even burn through.
Apart from the adverse effect of bright sunlight on wet leaves, spraying has beneficial effects for your Sempervivum, i.e. it removes dust from the leaves, allowing them to better absorb sunlight and appear more beautiful, and it prevents certain types of pests.

Where can you best place the Sempervivum - Hardy Fatty Plant?

For many plants it is important to determine the right place where it can best stand. Lots or little sun, sheltered from wind, in the shade at certain sun positions... this all makes a difference to the development of the plant. In this chapter you will find what's best for the Sempervivum - Winterhard Greasy Plant.

The Sempervivum - Winterhard Fatty Plant is a plant that loves sunlight reasonably. It loves to stand in full sun in half shade, taking in all the light. If it is indoors, it would like a spot near a window or where light does come in. The Sempervivum - Winterhard Fatty Plant requires at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Make sure that the Sempervivum - Winterhard Grease Plant experiences as little wind as possible. Wind can damage the leaves, causing them to die off more quickly. A little wind is no problem.

Temperature requirements

As stated in the title of this chapter, the Sempervivum is hardy, but hardy plants also have their limits, so it is recommended to bring the Sempervivum inside when it gets below -15 ℃. It is also recommended to keep the plant as dry as possible when it freezes.

Packing, why and when?

Repotting a Sempervivum - Hardy Grease Plant whose root ball has grown through brings a few advantages, namely that the plant grows faster when the roots have the space. It is also better able to withstand low temperatures with a larger root ball. It is then better able to absorb moisture from the soil and is therefore stronger and more stable.

General rules

When the Sempervivum - Hardy Fat Plant is rooted through (often every 2-3 years) we recommend repotting it in spring. If it is always indoors, it does not matter. If it is outside, it is not a problem to repot it in summer, but in autumn and winter we do not recommend repotting it, because it does not grow and rooting optimally. This may make it a bit weak, and it may suffer damage from frost.

When you choose to repot your Sempervivum - Winterhard Grease Plant, choose a nice pot twice the size of the root ball. Put a layer of hydro grains at the bottom of the new pot, for better moisture control. He will thank you for that. Fill this layer with some Mediterranean potting soil. This type of soil ensures that the Sempervivum - Winterhard Grease Plant is optimally rooted and fed. Then you can place the root ball on the soil. Make sure that the top of the root ball is slightly below the edge of the pot. Aim for a difference of 2 to 6 cm. This difference ensures that the water does not run off the root ball when you water it.
Every year you should replace the top soil layer, because it becomes hard and 'wears out' in terms of nutrients, because of the regular watering and because of the sunlight on the top edge of the root ball.

Provide the Sempervivum - Hardy Fatty Plant with good nutrition

During the summer and spring periods, your Sempervivum - Hardy Vetplant needs to be well nourished. Unfortunately, a good type of soil is not enough for this. It certainly helps in certain needs of the plant. But to keep the leaves nice and deep green and strong, we recommend supplementing the nutrition with the specialized food [florentus]. Pokon is much recommended by other shops, but we do not recommend it, because .... Florentus is a product based on natural nutrients from many different sources, a mix of organic, vegetable acids and pure concentrates, It is the perfect 'fertilizer' for plants. Your plant is very grateful for this nutrition and will reward you with shiny deep green leaves and a healthy strong roots.
If you want to give your plant that little extra luxury, we also recommend supplementing florentus with [Plant Ultra], which provides a few extra useful nutrients that the Sempervivum - Hardy Fatty Plant loves. They are not essential, but they do help with root growth and extra health and strength of the palm.

When the leaves discolour

The leaves may have black leaf tips, which may mean that too much water has been dispensed. Brown or yellow leaves may mean that too little water has been dispensed. We recommend checking this and adjusting the watering if necessary. We also recommend making the plant a bit more beautiful by simply cutting off the ugly tips with scissors.

It is also possible that the Sempervivum - Winterhard Vetplant has been moved from a spot with much/little light to a spot with a different amount of light. This may also cause the leaves to discolour. The new leaves will be more resistant to direct sunlight.
