Strelitzia - Bird of Paradise Flower

The Strelitzia is a beautiful tropical plant that has its origins in South Africa.
With many species such as the strelitzia reginae he also gives beautiful flowers (bird of paradise flowers) that look a lot like a bird of paradise, his name actually betrays it.
It can be grown indoors or outdoors as long as it doesn't get colder than 5 degrees Celsius. It remains a tropical plant.

Watering the Strelitzia Nicolai - Regenae

For almost all plants, watering is an important part of the plant's survival and growth. The Strelitzia is certainly no exception! In this chapter you will find all the necessary information so that you can properly supply your flower cane with moisture.

In summer the Strelitzia (reginae - nicolai) needs to be kept well moist, especially when it's outside in the heat and sunlight. The root ball needs to be really wet during the summer, sometimes twice a day. On less hot days this can be skipped for a day. Keeping the root ball moist is so important because otherwise the Strelitzia draws moisture from its leaves, which makes it barren, and it would eventually die. Of course we need to beat this.

In the winter months, the strelitzia should get less water. You can best see this by putting your finger in the ground, if it is still moist it still has enough water, if it is too dry it is best to water the strelitzia.
Before you buy a strelitzia, it is very important that you know that it is not hardy and therefore cannot hibernate outdoors.

General rules

In addition to the upper guidelines, it is best to use the following rules:

First give the palm a little water. If the soil is dry within 2 days it means it needs a little more water. Adjust the amount of water until it still feels slightly moist between 2 and 5 days after watering, and after 5 days almost dry. If it feels very wet after 5 days, then wait until it is almost dry and pour again, but reduce the amount.

Spraying the Strelitzia

Sprinkle the Strelitzia with water every week in spring/autumn, or in the evenings in summer. During the day the leaves would be damaged because of the sunlight. This is because the drops on the leaves bundle the light into a hot centre, which burns through the leaves.
Watering has beneficial effects for the Strelitzia. It removes the dust from the leaves so they can absorb sunlight better, making them more beautiful. It also fights pests.

Water system

If you use vulcastrat with a watermeter, there are very different watering rules! With this system you have to water the palm once a week until the watermeter moves. Go for a small meter rash, the smaller the better, because it indicates when there is TEVEL of water in the pot, so it would be optimal to stop pouring just before it rinses. In winter you can even water once every 2 weeks instead of every week. Vulcastrat is special in that it contains nutrients that promote the growth of the canna.

Where to place the Strelitzia Nicolai or the Regenae

For many plants and flower reeds, it is important to determine the right place where it can best stand. Lots or little sun, sheltered from the wind, in the shade at certain sun positions... this all makes a difference to the development of the plant. In this chapter you will find what is best for the Strelitzia Nicolai or the Regenae.

The Strelitzia Nicolai or the Regenae do like a little light, they remain a tropical plant, but they could also be placed in a place where there is less light, only the growth will be slower.
You can also buy the Strelitzia Nicolai or the Regenae to place it outside, this is only possible in the spring and summer months.
He's serving frost free to hibernate

Strelitzia's do like some warmth, they come from the rainforest of course.
A warmer place will therefore also ensure faster growth of the Strelitzia plants.
These places are hard to find in the Netherlands so we recommend if you place it outside, this will save you a few degrees!

The Strelitzia's can be placed in the wind, only of course they don't like this and can tear their leaves. They also have to go inside faster when placed in the wind.
We therefore also recommend that the plants are placed freely near a wall or fence.

Packing the Strelitzia, why and when?

Repotting a Canna - a flower cane whose root ball has grown through brings a few advantages, namely that the palm grows faster when the roots have the space, and also that the palm with a larger root ball can better withstand low temperatures. It is then better able to absorb moisture from the soil and is therefore stronger and more stable.

General rules

When the Canna flower cane is rooted (often every 2-3 years) we recommend repotting it, and then in spring. If it is always indoors, it doesn't matter when it is repotted. If it is outside, it's not a problem to repot it in summer, but in autumn and winter we do not recommend repotting it, because then it doesn't get the chance to root and grow optimally, which can make it a bit weak, and it may suffer damage from frost.

When you choose to repot your Canna flower cane, choose a pot twice the size of the root ball. Put a layer of hydro grains at the bottom of the new pot, for better moisture control. The Canna flower cane will thank you for that. Fill this layer with some Mediterranean feeding soil. This type of soil ensures that the canna roots optimally, and is fed. Then you can place the root ball on the ground. Make sure that the top of the root ball is slightly below the edge of the pot. Try to get a difference of 2 to 6cm. This difference ensures that the water does not run off the root ball when you water it.
Every year you should replace the top soil layer, because it becomes hard and 'wears out' in terms of nutrients, because of the regular watering and because of the sunlight on the top edge of the root ball.

Furthermore, it is no problem to put the Canna in the ground, as long as it is in a good spot, with enough sunlight, little wind and the palm is protected at extremely low temperatures (see 'Location'). We also recommend pouring out a bag of hydro grains under the root ball.

Feeding the Strelitzia well is important

Nutrition of the Strelitzia is important, especially during spring and summer. It is not enough to give the Strelitzia a good soil, it also needs to be nourished, because this improves the whole condition of the Strelitzia reed, both the core, the root ball and the leaves. You can read it mainly from the leaves, which are then stronger and deeper green in color. But it's not just the leaves. Pokon is much recommended by other stores, but we strongly recommend it, because it can be harmful in the long run, because of bad chemicals in it.

Florentus is a product based on natural nutrients from many different sources, a mix of organic, vegetable acids and pure concentrates of seaweed It is the perfect 'fertilizer' for plants. Your Strelitzia is very grateful for this nutrition and will reward you with shiny deep green leaves and healthy strong roots.

If you want to give your Strelitzia that extra bit of luxury, we also recommend supplementing Florentus with Ultra focus, which provides some of the extra useful nutrients the Strelitzia loves. They are not super-needed, but they do help with the root growth and extra health and strength of the palm.
