The propagation of a plant

There are all kinds of plants that can be propagated, be it through seed or through cuttings. After all, if a plant cannot propagate, how can it still exist? This does not mean that it is practical for every plant species to try to propagate them themselves. But many plant species can be propagated well by applying appropriate techniques.

Hoofdpunten

  • All plants can multiply
  • Not all plants are easy to propagate
  • Propagation takes place via seed and via cuttings

Main ways to cuttings

Cuttings are often used to propagate plants. In principle, an existing plant is taken, and it is partly split off, be it via the head or a branch or a leaf, etc. And this split off is specially taken care of so that it starts to take root and grow on its own. Such a cuttings product is called a cuttings or cuttings.

Headers

Head cutting is done by taking a shoot from a plant (called the 'mother plant') from the head of the shoot, 10 - 20cm long. Then it is wise to remove the leaves from the bottom of the shoot to the middle, for a better distribution of energy for the survival of the shoot. It can help to make notches along the underside of the shoot with a knife. These 'wounds' cause the shoot to react with the creation of new roots.

It is also most effective to take the shoot of a plant that has not yet grown, but is still in its growth phase.

Put the treated shoot in a small pot with slightly damp cutting soil and press it gently. Ensure an ambient temperature of about 20 degrees, and avoid bright sunlight. It takes about 4 weeks before the cutting has developed its roots and is ready to be re-potted.

Stem stumps

Stem cuttings are very similar to head cuttings, only there is no head on the stem. It is important that a strong developed shoot, half a cm thick, is taken. This is the most popular way of cutting in the cuttings trade.

Leaf cuttings are also often used

There are species of plants that can propagate themselves by cutting a leaf or part of a leaf. Roots then grow from the leaf. Below is an overview of the different ways to cut through a leaf.

Leaves of young plant in soil

This exceptional method of cutting only applies to a few plants. It is done by taking a leaf from a young plant and putting it in the ground. A new plant is then developed that at a certain point separates itself from the 'mother plant'. From that moment on, it has become a fully-fledged new plant.
